Celtic are reportedly closing in on a new contract with one of their key players as they look to secure another successful season in Scotland. The Hoops are currently locked in a title race with Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership, while Rangers will be hoping for a slip-up from the leaders to have any chance of re-entering the title chase.
After a productive summer transfer window, which included the signing of Kasper Schmeichel to replace the retired Joe Hart, Celtic are now focused on securing their key players with new contracts ahead of the January transfer window.
Celtic Close to Extending Alistair Johnston’s Contract:
Reports suggest Celtic are close to finalizing a new deal with defender Alistair Johnston. The club has reportedly tabled an offer that would see Johnston’s salary increased and his contract extended beyond his current terms, which run until the summer of 2027. According to *Record Sport*, discussions with the Canadian international’s representatives began in September, and talks have now progressed significantly. Johnston’s agent is said to be in Scotland to finalize the proposed extension, with Celtic confident of reaching an agreement to secure his long-term future at the club.
Johnston’s Impressive Record at Celtic:
Johnston, who joined Celtic from FC Montreal in 2022 under former manager Ange Postecoglou, has established himself as an important figure in the team. Since arriving, he has made 78 appearances, contributing six goals and 13 assists. This season, he has been a regular starter, not missing a single Scottish Premiership match and starting nine of the ten games so far.
When Johnston first signed, Postecoglou expressed his satisfaction with the move, noting that Celtic had been tracking him for some time. The former manager praised Johnston’s work ethic and his potential to add value both on and off the pitch.
“I’m delighted. He’s someone we identified pretty early on as somebody we think can add to our club,” Postecoglou said at the time. “He’s had an interesting career path, where he’s had to work very hard to get to where he is, and we’re very happy to conclude the deal. We knew he was going to the World Cup, and I think he performed well there as well. He’s really keen to take the next step in his career, and I think he’ll be a great fit in our dressing room and will definitely add something to our football as well.”
As Celtic looks to continue their success both domestically and in Europe, securing Johnston on a long-term deal will be a key part of their plans for the future.
