Why Celtic and RB Leipzig held minute silence and wear black armbands in Champions League

Celtic and RB Leipzig observed a moment of silence before their Champions League match in Glasgow to honor victims of recent severe flooding in Valencia, Spain. Both teams also wore black armbands as a mark of respect. Players from both squads gathered at the center circle prior to kick-off for the tribute, part of UEFA’s broader initiative across Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League games this week.

According to UEFA, this gesture aims to honor the memory of those affected by the deadly floods that struck Valencia, where heavy rains tragically claimed 217 lives. Relief operations and searches for missing individuals continue in the region, with other areas in Spain also on high alert for further dangerous weather. Some La Liga games in the affected areas were postponed, while others proceeded.

In the match itself, Celtic initially fell behind when Christoph Baumgartner scored from a corner, but Nicolas Kuhn responded shortly after, scoring twice to give Celtic the lead by halftime.
