Moment of Silence Planned for Celtic’s Champions League Match Against RB Leipzig
A moment of silence will be observed before tonight’s Champions League match at Celtic Park, where Celtic will face RB Leipzig, in remembrance of the victims of the severe flooding in Valencia, Spain.
UEFA has directed all clubs participating in UEFA competitions this week to take part in this tribute to honor those who lost their lives in this tragic event.
The floods have resulted in at least 217 deaths, with many more people still missing, predominantly in the Valencia area, including over 60 in the suburb of Paiporta. Among the deceased are a British couple.
Two matches in Spain were canceled due to the flooding, with Real Madrid’s match against Valencia and Villarreal’s game against Rayo Vallecano being postponed after a formal request was made to the governing body. Real Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, stated that all matches should have been suspended.
In an official statement, UEFA announced, “UEFA will hold a moment of silence at all UEFA club competition matches this week to honor the victims of the tragic floods in Valencia and all those affected in the region and beyond.”
The moment of silence at Celtic Park will provide an opportunity for players, staff, and fans to come together in solidarity with those impacted by this disaster.
With more rain expected in the area in the coming days, it is hoped there will be no further casualties and that the people of Spain can begin the difficult process of recovery.
