Steve Clarke recently named his Scotland squad for their last two Nations League matches of 2024, against Croatia and Poland. These games represent Scotland’s final chance to secure a competitive win this year and avoid potential relegation. Clarke’s selection process appeared more straightforward, reflecting recent improvements in the team’s performance, even though only one point was earned from four challenging matches against Poland, Portugal, and Croatia. His squad announcement also lacked the tension seen earlier in the year following Scotland’s disappointing Euro 2024 exit.
One surprise inclusion was Ipswich Town goalkeeper Cieran Slicker, who has yet to play senior club football but has featured for Scotland’s Under-21 team. Clarke explained that this call-up provides an opportunity to assess Slicker within the senior squad.
Hearts’ Craig Gordon remains Scotland’s first-choice goalkeeper, while defenders Scott McKenna and Jack Hendry return after injuries, adding experience to the squad. Clarke expressed hope that his regular players will stay fit, though Torino forward Che Adams remains uncertain due to a thigh injury. Clarke also opted not to call up Motherwell’s young midfielder Lennon Miller, stressing the importance of allowing him time to develop with the Under-19s.
For players recovering from longer-term injuries, such as Lewis Ferguson, Kieran Tierney, and Nathan Patterson, Clarke preferred they gain more club minutes before rejoining the national squad. Clarke’s goal is to conclude the year on a positive note and potentially advance in the Nations League, which could offer World Cup seeding advantages.
