Formal Celtic captain and nine-time All-Ireland winner announces his retirement

The 34-year-old’s impressive career spanned 14 seasons and included nine All-Ireland titles, a record he shares with teammates Stephen Cluxton and Michael Fitzsimons. While his retirement isn’t surprising due to his lengthy career and recent injury struggles, his participation in recent trial matches for Leinster had sparked speculation about him potentially continuing for another year.

In a statement, McCarthy shared that making this decision was not easy, but he believes it is the right time. He expressed gratitude for being part of a “golden period” for Dublin GAA and playing alongside remarkable teammates. “These have been some of the best days of my life, and I have memories that will last a lifetime,” he said, emphasizing the loyalty and friendships he has formed over the years.
