‘I still regret not signing Kaoru Mitoma for Liverpool – I should have insisted’….

Kaoru Mitoma, Brighton’s electric winger, has emerged as a constant threat to Liverpool, a fact now recognized by former Liverpool research chief Dr. Ian Graham, who admits he regrets not pushing harder to bring Mitoma to Anfield. The Japanese international’s journey to the Premier League began in August 2021 when he transferred from Kawasaki Frontale to Brighton before heading out on loan to Union SG in Belgium for a season. On his return to Brighton, Mitoma quickly made his mark, tallying 14 goals and 15 assists in 77 appearances. His performance includes a memorable last-minute winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup in January 2023.

Liverpool’s recent encounter with Brighton in the League Cup saw the Reds secure a 3-2 victory, with former Seagull Alexis Mac Allister returning to his old ground. Mac Allister, who joined Liverpool in a £35m deal in 2023, was brought on as a substitute and received a warm reception from Brighton fans. This marks the third time Mac Allister has faced his former team since his transfer, having previously set up Mohamed Salah’s winner in a 2-1 victory at Anfield.

In his new book, *How to Win the Premier League: The Inside Story of Football’s Data Revolution*, Dr. Graham reflects on Liverpool’s admiration for both Brentford’s and Brighton’s recruitment methods. He writes, “Kaoru Mitoma was the best player in Japan, rating above the Premier League average,” adding that such a high rating from a player outside of Europe was uncommon. His regret at not championing Mitoma’s potential to the Liverpool board speaks volumes about the winger’s impact since joining Brighton.

As Liverpool prepares to face Brighton again in the Premier League this Saturday, Mitoma’s consistent ability to challenge and disrupt the Reds’ defense remains fresh in fans’ minds. While Liverpool has already secured one of Brighton’s talents in Mac Allister, they may look back on Mitoma as the one that got away.
