Liverpool expert David Lynch has identified a key area that could give the Reds an advantage in their Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield this Saturday.
Arne Slot’s side comes into the match fresh off a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brighton in the EFL Cup, securing a quarter-final spot against Southampton. The two teams are closely matched in the Premier League, with just four places and six points separating them, as Brighton has enjoyed a strong start under their new manager, Fabian Hurzeler, who is the youngest permanent boss in the league’s history.
Liverpool will be without Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota for the match, but with a fit and firing attacking lineup featuring Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz, Lynch believes the Reds’ offensive options should be enough to overcome the Seagulls.
“I looked at Brighton’s expected goals, and while they are high for both goals scored and conceded, this suggests their games can be exciting,” Lynch explained to *Sports Mole*. “Liverpool’s firepower compared to Brighton’s gives them an edge, especially with their strongest XI likely starting at Anfield.”
He noted that the match will serve as a test for how well Liverpool can maintain control against a Brighton side that likes to push forward aggressively. “Brighton can score at crucial moments, so Liverpool must be sharp to secure a win,” he cautioned.
Historically, Brighton has posed a challenge for Liverpool during Jürgen Klopp’s tenure, with the Reds managing only three wins in their last ten encounters with the Seagulls across all competitions. However, Liverpool did achieve two victories against them earlier this year.
Under Hurzeler, Brighton has earned 16 points from their first nine league games, achieving notable wins against top teams like Tottenham and Manchester United, as well as holding Arsenal to a draw despite playing with ten men.
Lynch praised Hurzeler, highlighting his impressive start in management. He drew parallels between Brighton’s recruitment strategy and their choice of manager, noting how the club has consistently identified players who fit their system. “Their recruitment is remarkable, which has helped them progress from lower leagues to European competition,” he said.
He expressed surprise at Hurzeler’s success, given his youth, but acknowledged that the manager has quickly adapted to the demands of the Premier League.
With Nunez expected to lead the line for Liverpool, the upcoming match promises to be a significant challenge, as both teams aim to assert their strength early in the season.
