Another race weekend brought a new winner and fresh controversy—sparking debates that are sure to keep fans talking until the next round.

The Mexican Grand Prix was filled with action, with unexpected incidents throughout all three days, despite generally favorable track conditions for the drivers.

While a few drivers had standout performances, almost none managed to avoid mistakes altogether. Here’s a look at the RaceFans driver ratings for the weekend at the Mexican Grand Prix.

**Max Verstappen – 4/10**
– **Qualifying:** 2nd (+16 places ahead of teammate, -0.808s)
– **Start:** +1 place
– **Strategy:** One-stop (Medium-Hard)
– **Finish:** 6th (+11 places ahead of teammate)

**Key Points:**
– Missed most of second practice due to a power unit issue
– Secured a front-row start by outpacing rival Norris
– Gained the lead at the start, overtaking Sainz off the line
– Lost the lead to Sainz at turn one
– Received a 10-second penalty for forcing Norris off at turn four
– Received an additional 10-second penalty for forcing Norris off at turn seven
– Pitted for hard tires and overtook several cars to finish sixth
– Ended the race in sixth, ten seconds behind Mercedes

Verstappen was in a position to secure fourth place in Mexico, ahead of the two Mercedes cars. However, his aggressive approach led to penalties that ultimately cost him points. Although the world champion may not be overly concerned about missing out on fourth in the broader championship context, his performance must be evaluated accordingly, as his choices reduced his potential score.

**Sergio Perez – 3/10**
– **Qualifying:** 18th (-16 places behind teammate, +0.808s)
– **Start:** +5 places
– **Strategy:** Three-stop (Hard-Medium-Medium-Soft)
– **Finish:** 17th (-11 places behind teammate)

**Key Points:**
– Knocked out in Q1, qualifying 18th, just two-tenths from advancing
– Started on hard tires but received a 5-second penalty for a false start
– Advanced to 13th under the safety car, overtaking both Aston Martins
– Lost significant downforce after a clash with Lawson, resulting in an early pit stop
– Dropped to the back and struggled to close the gap on cars ahead
– Made a second stop for medium tires, then overtook Zhou
– Made a third stop for soft tires in the final laps but couldn’t secure the fastest lap
– Finished as the last car still running, in 17th place

Perez’s weekend was marred by a disappointing qualifying, a false start penalty, and a collision that left him with damage, all in front of his home crowd. Although he avoided crashing out of a session, his decisions contributed to a tough race. His slow pace later in the race can be somewhat excused due to his damaged car, but he arguably could have approached the race more wisely.

**Lewis Hamilton – 6/10**
– **Qualifying:** 6th (-1 place behind teammate, +0.295s)
– **Start:** +1 place
– **Strategy:** One-stop (Medium-Hard)
– **Finish:** 4th (+1 place ahead of teammate)

**Key Points:**
– Missed first practice session, allowing Antonelli to take the car
– Qualified sixth, three-tenths behind his teammate
– Overtook his teammate at the start but fell back after a restart
– Pitted for hard tires and rejoined behind his teammate
– Eventually passed his teammate after an intense, multi-lap battle
– Finished fourth, 10 seconds behind Leclerc

Hamilton’s weekend in Mexico was solid, though not particularly exceptional. He spent much of the race in a close battle with his teammate, ultimately prevailing after several laps. Despite the challenge, he showed stronger pace once ahead and managed to finish as the lead Mercedes.

**George Russell – 6/10**
– **Qualifying:** 5th (+1 place ahead of teammate, -0.295s)
– **Start:** -1 place
– **Strategy:** One-stop (Medium-Hard)
– **Finish:** 5th (-1 place behind teammate)

**Key Points:**
– Used an older spec on some parts throughout the weekend
– Had a heavy crash in second practice
– Secured fifth on the grid, finishing ahead of his teammate in qualifying
– Dropped behind Hamilton at the start, initially running in sixth
– Retook fifth place by passing Hamilton on lap 15 before pitting for hard tires
– Damaged his front wing after hitting a bump post-pit stop
– Defended against Hamilton for several laps before being overtaken
– Finished fifth, four seconds behind his teammate

Russell’s performance over the weekend was solid, especially considering the setback of a heavy crash on Friday. He qualified and finished near the Mercedes car’s potential pace, and despite losing to Hamilton in the race, he could reasonably cite his front wing damage as a factor. His defense against his teammate was resilient and clean, showing competitive spirit even with a slightly compromised car.
