Celtic has paid a heartfelt tribute to club legend Tommy Callaghan, who passed away at the age of 78. Callaghan, a midfielder beloved by fans, joined Celtic in the years following the iconic Lisbon Lions era, having been signed by Jock Stein after the club’s 1967 European Cup triumph in Milan. He became Celtic’s record signing at the time, joining from Dunfermline for £35,000 in November 1968, and he remains the only player Stein signed twice.
Callaghan was highly regarded at both Dunfermline, where he was a fan favorite, and Celtic Park, where he solidified his legendary status. During his eight years with the Hoops, from 1968 to 1976, he contributed to Celtic’s first run of nine consecutive league titles. Throughout his time with the club, Celtic won six league titles, five Scottish Cups, and three League Cups.
